The 8th Annual Opus Magnum Tournament, Presented by Kazyan

Every year, the Opus Magnum community does a tournament: we post a batch of brand new puzzles for players to optimize, with a ranked scoring system attached that you can, optionally, care about!

How To Participate

When a puzzle is posted here on events.critelli.technology, you’ll have 9 days to solve it. Click its link, download it, solve it within the week, and then upload your solution using the submission form on the same page you got the puzzle from. Then we’ll talk about your solution on the results stream and grade it.

Every puzzle will have two “metrics”, which are the way we’ll rank your solutions. For example, a Cost > Cycles > Area metric (abbreviated GCA) means that you should minimize cost, with ties broken by cycles, then area. You can submit as many solutions as you like, and we’ll consider only your best for each metric.

The puzzles will also form a storyline, for entertainment.

Scoring

A solution's score for a metric is based on its position in the ranking according to that metric. The formula used is:

300 / (rank + 29)

...where rank starts at 1 for first place and increases for each lower-ranked solution. Ties are ranked equally, with further solutions continuing after a gap. For example, if there's a three-way tie for second place, the ranks will go 1, 2, 2, 2, 5, …

At the end of the tournament, your score for each metric in each puzzle is added together to get your final score. We’ll also omit your two lowest weeks so you don’t have to pay attention to the tournament for every puzzle. Skip a puzzle if you hate it.

You don’t have to be an expert in Opus Magnum or care about the scoring system to participate. There are longtime players that will be fighting over the top 10 every week with the most cracked machines you’ve ever seen, but everyone is welcome to try. There’s a wide range of skill levels in every event.

Schedule

Each week's puzzle will release on Friday, 14:00 UTC, and will be due on Sunday, 13:59 UTC.

Rules

Players are not allowed to:

- Collaborate with other players. Your submission must be completely assembled by yourself.
- Submit as someone else or submit for someone else.
- Publicly post details about their solutions before the deadline. Including metrics, tiebreakers, etc. This also includes metrics that aren't chosen for that week. (If you want to vaguepost about how much you hate a metric or that you think you found the secret sauce for the puzzle, the #opus-magnum channel of the Unofficial Zachtronics Discord Server is the place. After the deadline, you can discuss the puzzle freely.)
- Fudge your metric scores or collision detection. The program we use to verify solutions will let you know if a metric differs on the newest Opus Magnum and decline your submission until you fix it.

Players may use mods, external solution-editors and tweaks to the puzzle in the process of solving it, but solutions will be checked against the original version of the puzzle. You have to be able to build your solution in-game, and it has to have come from your own skill.
