MIERE: He's looked at our papers, and is claiming that they're incomplete; missing some sort of authorization.
ADERNO: And how long will it take to get authorized?
MIERE: "At least a week."
RUTHIE: A week?! That can't possibly be right.
MIERE: It isn't. I've travelled this route a dozen times and back, and I'm confident that everything is already in order.
MIERE: There is little doubt in my mind that this man is abusing his position of power over us for no good reason.
FARAH: In that case, do you think he would be susceptible to a bit of bribery?
FARAH: I suspect my earrings would make for a good "gift".
FARAH takes off her earrings. They are a rich silvery-gold color, and shine beautifully as she hands them to MIERE.

MIERE: All of a sudden, everything seems to be "in order". That was some authorization.
RUTHIE: Oh, I so hate that you had to give up your earrings for this.
FARAH: You don't have to think much of it.
FARAH: Really, I'm quite alright to let them go. They aren't worth much anyways.
FARAH: Ninety-five percent salt by volume, in fact.
FARAH: (grinning) But aren't they resplendent?
MIERE: (laughing) You alchemists and your tricks. I think Chen had the right idea in sending you off on this expedition.
FARAH: I'm glad you think so. Although, I think we ought to get going before our friend downstairs realizes he's been tricked.
