Height is taken by measuring all of the rows a solution has occupied upon reaching the victory screen. If even a single hex from a given row is used, that entire row is counted. The shorter your solution, the better.
Period is the number of cycles that a solution's instruction tape uses to loop. For example, if a solution's instruction tape loops once every 12 cycles, it has a period of 12.
