started suspecting something here was quadratic after looking at how the score behaved, and found out that a curve fit to the points had a weirdly exact coefficient of 100. all i needed to confirm my suspicions was to build a machine of rate approximately 2.285715. i know rate math can get complicated, but this is the first time i've had to calculate a derivative for it!
